Curriculum Vitae - Short version
Paolo Garza received his laurea and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 2001 and 2005, respectively. He has been a postdoctoral fellow in the Dipartimento di Automatica e Informatica, Politecnico di Torino, since January 2005. His research has been supported by a postdoctoral research fellowship, granted by Politecnico di Torino, Regione Piemonte, and CRT Foundation, since May 2008.
Paolo Garza’s current research interests cover several aspects of data mining and database systems. In particular, his research has been devoted to the following main topics: (i) compact representation of XML documents and XML query optimization, (ii) associative classification algorithms.
- Compact representation of XML documents and XML query optimization. The research activity has been devoted to summarized representations of XML documents by means of association rules. Summarized representation may be used for answering queries, either when very large XML documents have to be queried, or when the actual XML document is not available. Summarization allows overcoming the limits of traditional XQuery engines, which cannot currently process significantly large XML documents. The main results of the research activity have been published on the ACM Transactions on Information Systems journal and in a book chapter.
- Associative classification algorithms. The research activity has been focused on innovative algorithms for performing classification by means of association rules. In particular, novel pruning techniques and classification algorithms based on compact representations for classification rules have been proposed and implemented in the L3 classifier. The proposed algorithms significantly increased the accuracy of classification models for both structured and textual data. The results of the research activity have been published on the IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering journal and in several conference papers.
Research projects.
Paolo Garza has been involved in national research projects funded by MIUR since 2001. In 2001 he was involved in a PRIN research project on management, transformation and exchange of data in a web environment. From 2002 to 2004 he managed a group of students developing a software prototype for industrial research project on the development of a framework for internet banking applications. In 2006, he was involved in a research contract with TelecomItaliaLAB on the design of a new generation transaction processing system with soft real-time constraints. He is currently working on the design of data mining algorithms for context-aware systems, in collaboration with TelecomItaliaLAB.
Scholarly service.
Paolo Garza served as referee for the ACM Transactions on Information Systems (special issue on XML Retrieval) and for the Data & Knowledge Engineering journal. He served on the program committee for the IADIS International Applied Computing 2006 conference. Since 2002 he has been serving as external referee for the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing, the International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery, and the European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases.
Teaching Activity.
Paolo Garza has been teaching assistant for courses on Database systems, Database systems technology, and Data warehousing and Data mining since 2002. He has been co-advisor of more than 20 master students, thus supervising their master thesis projects.
